IMPROVED TRADE BETWEEN DUNDEE AND AMERICA
(Source – Dundee year Book 1889)
The annual report issued by Mr. A.B. Wood, U.S. Consul at Dundee, shows that there has been a gratifying development of the trade between Dundee and America during the year ending 30th September. The total value of the goods forwarded from Dundee throughout the year is set down at 8,808,968 dollars (equivalent to about £1,810,124), an increase over the previous year of 1,150,708 dollars, or £236,454. This is the largest exportation that has yet been reached in the history of Dundee. Burlaps form the most important item, the value of these being declared at 5,513,770 dollars. Linens come next, of a value of 2,030,726 dollars, and jute yarn of the value of 666,404 dollars. It is noteworthy that there was an increase in each quarter, the last three months being 419,895 dollars ahead of the corresponding period in 1888. Aberdeen, which is a dependency of Dundee, forwarded goods to the value of 568,176 dollars (£116,750), an increase over the previous year of 56,208 dollars (£11,550). Polished granite was the largest item, the value being 286,870 dollars. Linens are valued at 60,256 dollars; breeding stock at 42,732 dollars; herrings at 32,579 dollars; and woollens at 50,720 dollars. Thus the total value of goods forwarded from the Consular district is 9,377,144 dollars (£1,926,877), an increase of 1,206,917 dollars (£248,004) compared with the previous year.
