(The First Joint Stock Company , for carrying  on the Trade betwixt London and Dundee, was established in the year 1798; since that time the Dundee and Perth Old Shipping Company have regularly dispatched two smacks from Dundee every week, and the same number from London. The total number of voyages, therefore, performed from 1798, up to this present period (1824) will amount to 5408 voyages. The value of each ship may be calculated at £2000 and the value of each cargo at £5000; which, during the time above specified, makes the aggregate amount of property to be £37,856,000 afloat and conveyed by water betwixt the Tay and the Thames. From the first commencement of this trade, up to the present time, one vessel only has been lost, value £2000; add expences incurred in saving the cargo, £1000;  to this may be added the amount of averages and partial losses, £3000 – total loss, £6000. The total amount of losses, therefore, is only six thousand pounds during the performance of 5408 voyages, an including a period of 26 years, during the greater part of which time  the trade had to encounter the additional risk of capture from privateers and other cruizers, fitted out in the ports of France, Holland, Denmark, and Sweden. The benefit arising to  shippers of goods, passengers, and underwriters, on these very superior and complete vessels, will appear from the simple fact, that the trifling sum of 3d for every hundred pounds will cover the risk betwixt Dundee and London by these smacks; and if the goods conveyed to and from London had been insured at the very moderate premium of 5s. per cent., the profit to the underwriters would have amounted to the sum of £88,640 sterling, after paying every loss in full.)
