CARTOON OF DINGLE M FOOTE, MP The above cartoon, shows Dingle McIntosh Foot, Member of Parliament for Dundee East from 1931 to 1945, who entered Dundee East Poorhouse in disguise, in order to investigate complaints from some of the inmates, who were constituents of his. The incident is reported in the Dundee Courier of 30 August 1932. The cartoon is from a newscuttings and prints book, 1926-34, from Dundee East Poorhouse (Dundee City Archives reference CP/DE 4/1). Although Foote was the common Dundee surname, the MP spelled his name 'Foot', as his illustrious family did also. When in Dundee, he used 'D McIntosh Foot', to emphasise his Scottish connections. It may be that the cartoonist was a local artist who put his Foot(e) in it! |
